Beginnings

In 1939, Spencer was appointed head of Raytheon's energy division and secured a multi-million dollar government contract to produce military radars.

The magnetron is the invention that precedes the microwave. Although its invention predates Spencer's intervention, it was he who industrialized its production.

Microwave oven

The invention was entirely accidental. One day, while Spencer was working at the factory, he noticed a chocolate bar he was carrying in his pocket melt.

While others had already experienced something similar to being in the presence of high-frequency electromagnetic radiation, he was the only one encouraged to continue researching the subject. So he performed the experiment with popcorn and an egg in a pan.

The first microwave

In 1947, the first commercially manufactured microwave was produced. It was between five and six feet tall and weighed about 750 pounds. It cost between $2000 and $3000.

Initially, it was used in restaurants and boats because these places required cooking large quantities of food at once. They were also too large and expensive for home use. This early model also had other problems, such as difficulty cooking meat.

The first domestic oven was introduced in 1955, costing nearly $1300 and too large for a typical kitchen. After several investigations and thanks to the development of a smaller magnetron in Japan, the first truly practical microwave for home use was developed in 1967. It was small enough to sit on the kitchen counter and cost $495.

It took a while for the public to accept the microwave as a new cooking method, but by the time of Spencer's death, they had become a staple of American kitchens.

By 1975, most of the myths and legends surrounding the new device had disappeared, and for the first time, its sales exceeded those of the gas oven.
