Denis Papin, born in 1647 in France, was an inventor and physicist who revolutionized global cooking with the creation of the pressure cooker. He studied mathematics and physics at the University of Angers and later moved to London, where he worked as an assistant to Robert Boyle, a famous chemist and physicist.

In 1679, Papin invented the pressure cooker, a device that allowed food to be cooked at high pressure, speeding up the cooking process. This invention not only made cooking faster but also more efficient, preserving the food's nutrients. Furthermore, the pressure cooker reduced firewood consumption, making it a more sustainable option.

Despite his contributions to cooking, Papin also made important advances in science. He developed the first practical steam engine, which was later improved by James Watt and became essential to the Industrial Revolution. Denis Papin (1647-1712) was a French physicist, mathematician, and inventor, known for creating the steam digester and being a precursor to the steam pot. Furthermore, his contributions are considered essential in inspiring the subsequent development of the first cylinder-piston steam engine.

Despite having studied medicine, he achieved little in his career, dedicating himself to mathematics and mechanics. During his working years, he shared ideas and carried out projects alongside great figures of the time, such as Christiaan Huygens, Robert Boyle, and Gottfried W. Leibniz.

Biography

Early years and studies

In August 1647, Denis Papin was born in the city of Blois, capital of the French Loir-et-Cher region. His parents were Sir Denis Papin and Madeleine Peneau, who had 12 other children. His family followed Calvinist or Huguenot doctrine, as this group of French Protestants was commonly known.

There is little information about his childhood and youth, but it is known that his uncle Nicolás Papin, a doctor in Saumu, took care of him after the age of six. Following family tradition, in 6 he began his medical studies at the University of Angers, where he obtained his diploma in 1661.

Although he originally intended to pursue a medical career, he was losing interest in his first year of practice, while his preference for mathematics and mechanics grew.

In 1670, he traveled to Paris to dedicate himself to developing mechanical devices as an assistant to Christiaan Huygens. Together with this German physicist, astronomer, and mathematician, he conducted several experiments, including the construction of an air pump.

In those years he established a close friendship with another of Huygens' assistants, Gottfried W. Leibniz, who years later was also remembered as one of the great thinkers of the 17th and 18th centuries.

In 1674 , a joint work by Huygens and Papin, Vacuum Experiments, was published , in which their experiments to preserve food in a vacuum are described, along with some machines to achieve this. In 1675, it was published again, but this time in the form of 5 scientific articles and under the name Philosophical Transactions.

Period in London, Venice and Marburg

Soon after his publications, in 1675, on Huygens' recommendation, he traveled to London to work with Robert Boyle, considered the "father of chemistry." Alongside him, he developed a compressed air pistol and managed to improve the vacuum pump by replacing the two shut-off valves with double barrels.

In 1679, he exhibited his famous "steam digester for softening bones," which would evolve into the pressure cooker as we know it today. In 1680, he invented the condensation pump and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society by Boyle's nomination. The Royal Society was one of the oldest and most recognized groups of scientists in the United Kingdom and Europe.

In 1682, he moved to Venice, when invited to participate in the work of the Academy of Philosophical and Mathematical Sciences, recently founded by Ambrose Sarotti.

The academy had little success, in addition to financial problems, so Papin had to return to London in 1684. There, he resumed his work at the Royal Society as a "temporary curator of experiments".

In 1687, he presented another of his inventions, but with little satisfaction due to the poor results. It was the pneumatic transmission of power over long distances. In November of that year, he was appointed professor of mathematics at the University of Marburg in Germany, where he remained for almost eight years.

In 1690, he published his first work, which focused on the steam engine. It was a piston machine in which he replaced the explosive used by Huygens with water vapor, achieving condensation and a "perfect vacuum."

I return to London and in recent years

In 1705, he devoted himself to working with his friend and former partner Gottfried W. Leibniz, with whom he continued to sketch out some early steam engine designs, inspired by Thomas Savery's sketches. He then went on to work on prototypes for other inventions, such as the submarine, the air pistol, and the grenade launcher.

In 1707, he presented his 'new way of raising water by the force of fire,' which he intended to improve upon Savery's work. However, he failed to achieve commercial results.

That year, he returned to London, intending to go back to work at the Royal Society , as he was experiencing financial difficulties, but the society was not in a position to hire more staff. Therefore, he continued writing and publishing articles to improve his prototypes.

In early 1712, destitute and nearly friendless, Denis Papin was found dead in London, England. His burial place is unknown. One hundred years later, his contributions were recognized, and a bronze statue was erected in his honor in his hometown.

Papin's main contribution was undoubtedly the steam digester, later known as the pressure cooker, although its development was not suitable at the time for commercial purposes.

It was a closed container with an airtight lid that limited the steam to generate high pressure, which considerably raised the boiling point of water.

The food that was placed inside was cooked much faster than common methods, being steamed at a temperature 15% higher than the boiling point of water.

Papin was the first to use a safety valve to control steam pressure and prevent explosions in early engines. He observed that enclosed steam tended to lift the cap, which allowed him to design a piston-in-cylinder, a basic design for early steam engines.

The inventor of the condensate pump also spent nearly 40 years developing mechanical devices and worked on numerous prototypes and sketches that would later prove very useful.

These include the pneumatic power transmission, the air pump, the steam engine, the submarine, the air gun, the vacuum pump, the grenade launcher, and a rowboat that would later replace oars on ships. Steamboats
